Rapid growth of the railroads did not come without a good deal of pain. Score: 4 out 10 The Bottom Line Fans will appreciate this piece because it is an opportunity to see Cash in a new light and in some interesting scenes. These programs are not particularly interesting - and without sound they are not worth watching. The problem with these special features are the two programs without sound. The outtakes do not provide much new information into Cash's performances and frankly, you may not even be able to recognize them as outtakes. Given the obscurity and age of this documentary it comes as little surprise that there are few of the extras featured on more recent releases. If you are a Cash fan, this will no doubt be quite a different addition to your collection of live in concert performances. As mentioned earlier, Cash's own tracks provide the only soundtrack to the film. There was little to no difference between the two options. The only audio options are Stereo 2.0 and Dolby 5.1. Score: 6 out of 10 The Audio Presentation There are no subtitles or other languages offered. The color seems appropriate for the time periods (both during when the doc was shot and when the re-enactments take place), but overall they are washed out. Score: 6 out of 10 (Johnny Cash Fans Score: 8 out of 10) The Video The initial video was clearly of low-quality and the transfer makes its best effort, but is still soft and fuzzy in some areas. It is also a delight to see him in three different versions of the tuxedo.

Imagine Johnny Cash in his original glory dressed in a clean cut black button down shirt and pants and then suddenly he is in full cowboy gear, including a bandana 'round his neck and a holster on his belt. This may seem excessive, but it really adds to the kitschy feeling. A comical thread throughout the one hour presentation, Cash progresses through eleven costume changes. He recalls fond memories of waving hi to the conductor, and although Cash reveals himself in this personal moment, his stiffness throughout the film makes it difficult to hold your interest. He mentions a train that was stationed near his own home as a child. Cash seems very connected with the subject matter. Unlike the re-enactments, which are clearly made with all actors, these clips allow the Cash fans moments with their hero. Cash's music is the main soundtrack for the film, including short interludes of Cash alone on a mountainside or at a train stop, playing his guitar and singing.
Illustrations are used to bring the material together, however that only magnifies the low production value not to mention that the only character to follow is the railroad. The plentiful re-enactment scenes are set from the mid-1800s, traveling through to the late 1970s. Filmed and aired in 1974, Ridin clearly had a low-scale budget. The horse drawn carriage may have prevailed over the train at one time, but this documentary follows the advancements trains made and clearly surpassed horses over the subsequent 145 years. Cash walks through a reenacted historical race of horse vs. Narrated by and starring Cash, Ridin's story begins way back in 1830.
